The EC–JRC International Workshop on ‘‘Promotion of Technical Harmonisation on Risk-Based Decision Making’’ (Stresa/Ispra, May 2000) investigated the use of risk-based decision making across different industries and countries.This paper presents the contribution to the workshop covering risk assessment for the offshore industry.The format is in response to a set of questions prepared by the organisers of the workshop and summarised in the ‘‘Preface’’ of this special issue. The attention of the risk management in the offshore industry is focussed on safety of the crew and the installation, prevention of environmental damage and production regularity.Unli ke the onshore process industry, the potential for threatening third party is quite limited for most offshore installations. This document will be limited to cover safety aspects — safety to people’s life and health, as well as environment and property.Alth ough risk assessments may
